A group of truckers protesting COVID-19 mandates is returning to California from Washington, DC, a group spokesperson has confirmed.
The People’s Convoy has been hanging around the nation’s capital for the past three weeks, circling the Beltway and causing traffic jams. The group was inspired by an earlier trucker protest in Canada, but the U.S. group has been comparatively paltry. Some prominent members have already cut their tour short. In media interviews, some truckers have had a hard time articulating what they’re fighting for, especially in light of relaxed COVID mandates nationwide.
The convoy will arrive in California at a time when the governor has rescinded statewide mask mandates. Major hubs like Los Angeles have already dropped their vaccine requirements for public spaces. However, state lawmakers have proposed a series of bills that would strengthen vaccine rules for students and workers. Those bills appear to be the focus of the upcoming protest in California. You can read more about those bills here.
The group originally departed from Adelanto, California on Feb. 23. On the way to Washington, DC, the truckers made stops in several states including Arizona, Texas, Oklahoma, and Missouri.
