[Mr. Dupree, Principal, Indian Creek Elementary School]
TK- 4th grade students at Indian Creek School have been creating costumes that will send a host of words marching around our playground at 9:30 am on March 4, 2022. Come laugh, applaud, and be amazed by our students’ ingenuity. Watch three boys forge an ALLIANCE, three girls sail in as FRIENDSHIP, or witness a branch-covered student portray CONIFEROUS. Approximately 500 students will be participating in the Indian Creek Vocabulary Parade.
We promise to make our parade of words memorable. The Vocabulary Parade is part of Indian Creek School’s ongoing effort to increase word recognition among our students. The parade concept is based on Debra Frasier’s book, Miss Alaineus, A Vocabulary Disaster, where a student confuses the word “miscellaneous” for the person, Miss Alaineus. In this hilarious story, great embarrassment is assuaged by turning this mortifying mistake into a winning costume at the Vocabulary Parade.
Other learning activities taking place during the Week of Words include the construction of a Word Wall out of Vocabulary Definition Cards and a ‘Golden Ticket’ Book Exchange.
Indian Creek Elementary School is an elementary school serving 494 students in Placerville, CA. Established in 1980, our school places a strong emphasis on strengthening reading and writing skills.
