El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office]
This week, EDSO has been called about two different types of scams that seem to be going around the area.
1. A couple of residents have called us regarding identical text messages coming from the same phone number. The messages, calling the person by their name, say that they have been hired to kill/assassinate them. After going into detail about this, the text says that the person can pay fees to “spare their lives”.
2. Earlier this week, a couple in a relationship were each called at the same time by different people (a scamming group). They were informed that their child had been kidnapped and they needed to pay a ransom in order to get them returned. The twist on this was that each suspect caller was using information provided by one parent, to use towards the other one. This made it seem all the more real as the suspects were able to relay real life information.
Please be aware of these scamming tactics and do not send funds to people you do not know. If you receive a scamming phone call, you can report it to your local authorities, the FTC or the IRS.
If you believe someone has been abducted or kidnapped, call 911!
