SACRAMENTO – On Thursday, February 10 lawmakers will hold a press conference urging the passage of Assembly Concurrent Resolution 46 (Kiley/Gallagher) and Senate Concurrent Resolution 5 (Melendez) to end the State of Emergency.
WHAT:
Press conference in support of ACR 46 (Kiley/Gallagher) and SCR 5 (Melendez) to end the State of Emergency
WHERE:
California State Capitol, West Steps
WHEN:
Thursday, February 10 at 8:00 a.m.
WHO:
Assemblyman Kevin Kiley
Assemblyman James Gallagher
Senator Melissa Melendez
Members of the Senate and Assembly
WHY:
After nearly two years, California remains under Governor Gavin Newsom’s State of Emergency despite the state’s plans to host the Super Bowl on February 13, 2022. Under the California Emergency Services Act, the Governor is required to terminate the State of Emergency “at the earliest possible date that conditions warrant.” In the event that this requirement is not upheld, the Legislature has the power to terminate the emergency by concurrent resolution. ACR 46 does this by declaring “that the state of emergency proclaimed by Governor Gavin Newsom on March 4, 2020, is at an end and that the emergency powers granted to the Governor as a result of that proclamation are terminated.”
Many Republican and Democratic governors across the country have rightfully ended their emergency declarations and statewide mandates. It is time for the California Legislature to follow the lead of these states by doing what Governor Newsom has been unwilling to do. If the Governor himself can attend a football game maskless and Los Angeles can host 70,000 people at the Super Bowl, we are no longer living under an emergency.
