Description
The 2021 California wildfire season is on track to exceed the historic losses of life, property, and wildlands that occurred last year in 2020, which broke previous records. As we know too well, a significant portion of our county did not escape the ravages of the Caldor fire that destroyed over 1,000 structures and displaced over 53,000 residents.
This presentation, based on the California Native Plant Society’s (CNPS) updated statewide guide designed with input from leading experts, offers science-based guidance for those who will soon be working toward recovery of their land in a manner that reduces wildfire risk going forward. It is being presented in collaboration with the El Dorado Master Gardeners, El Dorado Chapter of CNPS, and the El Dorado Resource Conservation District (RCD).
“After a disaster, the human impulse is to repair what’s broken. Looking across a scorched and blackened landscape, we naturally want to make things better. But in our rush to help, we risk making things worse. Without the right information, even the best intentions can be harmful.”
This information provides science-based recommendations to help homeowners assess when and how to take action to support the places they love. We will focus primarily on areas of common concern like erosion, fire-damaged trees, reseeding, and defensible space. We will also address frequently asked questions and tools to help you assess your property post-fire.
This information will help homeowners to identify actions that benefit their land while helping them avoid actions that may actually be detrimental in the long run. It is our hope that this information encourages conversations and more awareness about how we can live with fire in an increasingly fire-prone environment while protecting our streams and rivers and the survival of the flora and fauna that make El Dorado County home. Many California communities are facing difficult recover
