Bryce Mefford of El Dorado Hills survived the semifinals on Wednesday to advance to the men’s 200-meter backstroke swimming finals in the Tokyo Olympics.
The 21-year-old ranked fourth in his heat and sixth overall in the semifinals. He was outpaced by his University of California, Berkeley teammate Ryan Murphy, the defending Olympic champion who finished first.
Mefford came into Tokyo ranked fifth in the world for the event he competed in.
