“FAIR PLAY WINE REGION’S IMAGE THREATENED BY DREADFUL MONSTROSITY”
Shari Fitzpatrick, Fair Play, CA (April 14, 2021) — Just an hour east of Sacramento, the Fair Play region attracts wine lovers from around the world. It is El Dorado County’s premier wine growing AVA; growing extraordinary, high-quality grapes and producing world-class wines. This region is one of northern California’s favorite wine tasting destinations.
In stark contrast to the residents’ efforts to maintain and enhance the area’s reputation as a first-class destination, a large chain store is being proposed at the wine region’s main entrance. A DOLLAR GENERAL Store, with its signature giant neon yellow marquis, will mar and degrade the entry to this stylish El Dorado County wine destination.
“To even consider placing this store at the gateway to our Fair Play wine area goes against everything our community has strived to achieve. Our tourism is thriving and placing a Dollar General at our gateway is not the message we want to project to our visitors and denigrates everything we have tried to develop for three decades”, said Scot Telfer, Chair-Person of the Keep Somerset Rural Committee.
The prized intersection at the heart of this dispute is located at the corner of E16 and Fair Play Road. Ironically, a local residents’ new endeavors are just one intersection down at the corner of E16 and Bucks Bar Road and are far different from Dollar General’s. More than half of this commercial lot was donated for development of the community’s fire and life support facility. Residents purchased two 5,000-gallon tanks, helped plumb and install a public district fire hydrant, graded and installed a Life Flight helipad and dedicated a water well. Plans include a spacious gathering place with a soothing waterfall and firepits, an upscale gourmet deli/market, taphouse and an event center. Their commercial development will be a historic and beautiful addition to the Fair Play region.
Local businesswoman and entrepreneur, Shari Fitzpatrick, appreciates the culture and uniqueness of the Fair Play area. “We moved here years ago to get away from it all. It’s shocking and heartbreaking to think our supervisors would even consider allowing something this hideous to be permitted”, said Fitzpatrick.
