Community members made a show of force, many taking umbrage not only with General Manager Kevin Loewen’s reference to “caging” in the area but also the aesthetics of the district’s fencing design concepts. Most argued for the measure to ensure community safety and prevent what they felt were untenable conditions last summer, referencing burglaries, drugs, sex, noise, outsized crowds and even a gunshot through a resident’s living room.
“It’s reasonable to expect that we live in a safe environment and feel safe in our homes and that’s been compromised by the activity at the park,” said resident Mike Roppolo. “I also don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect a restful night’s sleep.”

“We do have a plan in place in case we experience the issues that happened last year,” assured Mattock. “We welcome people into our community to use our public parks and our public trails. That’s not going to change. We take everybody’s concerns seriously because we care. That’s why we’re here.”
