UPDATE:
EL DORADO HILLS, Calif. (KTXL) — An El Dorado County woman leaped into action on Friday afternoon when a bus of Valley View Charter students caught fire.
“It was so scary,” said Amilia Rymer.
Rymer was leaving the park with her 4-year-old son when they pulled behind the bus on El Dorado Hills Boulevard. But she soon noticed something was wrong as they approached the Highway 50 overpass.
“I saw the flames burst out,’” Rymer recalled.
The bus’s engine — located in the back —was on fire.
“I started honking at the bus driver until he pulled over, and then I threw my car in park and ran up there and started yelling at the kids to get off,” Rymer said.
One by one, Rymer, the bus driver and others got the children out of the bus and to safety. Minutes later, the fire department showed up.
“The whole back of the bus was flames, and it was chaotic,” Rymer said.
El Dorado Hills firefighters put out the fire but not before severe damage was done to the back of the bus.
According to the U.S. Department of Transporation, it’s more common than one might think. There is a minimum of one school bus fire per day in the United States. Rymer said she happened to be at the right place at the right time on Friday.
No injuries were reported, and the children were taken to their respective stops by another bus.
