The El Dorado County Office of Education (EDCOE) is excited to announce that a new Adult Learning Center has been created in the town of El Dorado on the same property as the Northern California Construction Training (NCCT) site near Poor Red’s. The center offers a variety of free instruction to the entire community to help build skills and meet personal goals. Dr. Ed Manansala, El Dorado County Superintendent of Schools, noted, “This comprehensive center will empower those who wish to continue their education and help build a stronger workforce in our community. Thank you to all who made this possible.”
The varied courses are taken at the student’s own pace and enable students to:
- Improve basic skills in reading, writing, and math
- Prepare to take the GED or HiSET (in English or in Spanish)
- Work towards a high school diploma
- Assess individual aptitudes
- Explore career options and planning
- Prepare for Northern California Construction Training (NCCT)
- Plan for college, including financial aid (FAFSA)
- Develop 21st century workforce skills
- Develop digital literacy
- Improve keyboarding skills
- Develop financial literacy
A new program to help individuals enhance their English-speaking skills began in January called the English as a Second Language (ESL) program. Students who speak any language can take this free, structured 18 week class two nights per week.
In addition to educational courses, the campus hosts the nonprofit Future Fire Academy which offers basic fire fighter training for employment with fire departments, the Bureau of Land Management and the Forest Service. It is an eight-week course that includes classroom and physical training. Students receive paid training on fuel suppression and fire clean up.
NCCT offers construction and agricultural training that is open and free to the community. The El Dorado Probation Department, NCCT and EDCOE partnered to provide this training that leads to well-paying jobs often immediately after training is complete.
