Placerville picked Commander Wren as interim police chief after James Ortega stepped down from his position this week following a closed city council meeting where he and the city mutually agreed to part ways.
On January 8, 2016 Former Cheif Heller Swore-in Commander Joseph Wren. Previously Joseph Wren was with the Ceres Police Department. At the Sutter Creek Police Department in Amador County Wren started his career in 1996. “Wren is also a military veteran, serving as a Marine and Army National Guardsman,” According to the Mtn Democrat.
Commander Wren came to the Placerville Police Department in 2016 after an extensive statewide selection process. With over 20 years of law enforcement experience in a variety of different roles, Commander Wren was selected. He brought with him experience as a Homicide Investigator, SWAT member/leader, K9 Handler, and Field Training Officer, as well as leading patrol officers and specialized units as a Sergeant.
Commander Wren has a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration.
The Placerville City Manager issued a Media release stating,
“Joe recently returned from an intensive ten week training at the FBI Academy. He has been a leader in the department through his example and hard work.
The City Manager and City Council will continue to evaluate options for appointment of a permanent chief.
The City is facing difficult times due to the current pandemic crisis. We are confident Commander Wren will help us navigate through this crisis and continue to lead a great department and terrific staff.”
