Red Hawk Casino to begin laying off some workers; closure extended indefinitely

One tribal casino will begin laying off workers, as the extended closure due to the COVID-19 outbreak takes its toll.

After being closed for three weeks, Red Hawk Casino announced it will begin laying off and furloughing workers. Salaried workers will also be getting pay cuts. The Placerville casino has an estimated 1,300 workers, and is the fourth-largest employer in El Dorado County.

On March 17, the casino announced it would temporarily close. On March 25, it extended the closure until April 16. At the time, the casino said workers would keep receiving their pay and benefits. Now, it says, it will close indefinitely.

“The casino has worked exhaustively to ensure they are taking care of their team members to the best of their ability, while at the same time, preserving the financial viability of the business,” Red Hawk said in a news release.
