On the first day of the Fair, children participated in the 1K Kids\u2019 Fun Run where they raced against County Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Ed Manansala, along a course that weaved around the fairgrounds. For some runners, it was their first time; others had been participating for years. After the race, runners received El Dorado County Office of Education (EDCOE) water bottles and congratulatory medals. Among the runners were 3rd-grade Brycen Minton and kindergartener Dreden Minton. This was Brycen\u2019s third year participating in the race and explained, \u201cI like this race because I like running and run all the time at school!\u201d<\/p>\n

The fun continued for the entire weekend as Golden Star Student Award winners from across the County came to the booth to collect prizes and take photos in the photo booth. At the end of every school year, EDCOE grants Golden Star Student Awards to those who have demonstrated their commitment to learning, becoming well-rounded, and giving back. More than 5,000 students received an award certificate and a complimentary pass to the El Dorado County Fair.<\/p>\n

Individual schools determined criteria to recognize up to 20 percent of their student body. The criteria may have included scholastic achievement, outstanding citizenship, significant educational improvement, athletics, performing arts, community service, attendance, and more.<\/p>\n

Two brothers from Pioneer Union School District visited on Saturday \u2013 Aiden Haboush who will attend 7th grade next year and Ethaniel Haboush who graduated this year and will attend Union Mine High School next year. \u201cI\u2019m excited to visit the booth and receive our prizes,\u201d Ethaniel said after placing his photo strip on the display board to represent his school district. \u201cIt\u2019s great that we both get tacos!\u201d<\/p>\n

This year, the Active 20-30 Hangtown #43 Club donated enough of their famous Fair tacos, so every single Golden Star Student who visited the booth could receive one. \u201cWe are all about the kids in our community service club and enjoy doing what we can to help out. Every year at this Fair, I am always impressed by the outpouring of community support and volunteers who make this booth possible. The money we raise goes to helping kids in other ways throughout the year,\u201d said the Club\u2019s Past-President Ryan West. The Golden Star Student booth also served as a resource for families regarding local education. On Saturday, County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Ed Manansala volunteered at the booth and expressed, \u201cI would like to thank the school district volunteers, EDCOE team and family members whose volunteer efforts made this booth a success.
