El Dorado Sheriff John D\u2019Agostini joined a roundtable discussion with President Trump, including more than 15 local law enforcement officials, lawmakers, and administration officials from California in a discussion with Trump, Attorney General Jeff Sessions, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and ICE Director Thomas Homan on their opposition to California’s sanctuary state policies.<\/p>\n

Sheriff D\u2019Agostini told the President \u201cwe just want to do our jobs and keep our communities safe. \u00a0This bill absolutely jeopardizes public safety in our communities. \u00a0We\u2019re not immigration officers, we never have been and we\u2019re never going to be. We just want to be able to cooperate with our federal partners so that these folks that end up in our custody and need to be deported, get deported,\u201d the Sheriff said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll take care of it\u201d Trump said emphasizing the dangers of immigrant gang members. \u00a0 He assured the sheriff the administration would continue working.<\/p>\n

McClintock has urged local elected officials in his Congressional District to comply with federal law in dealing with illegal aliens known to local law enforcement agencies. \u00a0McClintock has asked several County Boards of Supervisors to take a stand against state actions that thwart enforcement of federal immigration law. \u201cThese state actions place local communities in direct defiance of federal law and prevent them from protecting the safety of their citizens,\u201d McClintock said.<\/p>\n

\u201cLaw enforcement is alarmed at the rising crime rate caused by California\u2019s unprecedented flaunting of federal law,\u201d McClintock said. \u201c I thank Sheriff D\u2019Agostini for traveling to the White House to tell his story to the President and the nation, and for his courage in standing up for the people of El Dorado County.\u201d<\/p>\n

[SHERIFF D\u2019AGOSTINI<\/strong>] \u00a0Thank you, Mr. President. \u00a0John D\u2019Agostini. \u00a0I\u2019m the elected Sherriff of El Dorado County, California. \u00a0the bottom line from sheriffs \u2014 and you\u2019ll hear from my peers, as well \u2014 is we just want to do our jobs. \u00a0We want to do what the people elected us to do, and that is respect our Constitution and keep our communities safe.<\/p>\n

When this bill was being heard in legislature and it was going through … what literally disgusted me was a common term that we heard throughout the discussion of SB 54 from different legislators. \u00a0And the quote was, \u201cWe know this is bad policy but it\u2019s great politics.\u201d \u00a0That\u2019s wrong. \u00a0Because this bill absolutely jeopardizes public safety in our communities.<\/p>\n
