{"id":6640,"date":"2017-10-06T21:28:17","date_gmt":"2017-10-07T04:28:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.newsmolo.com\/EDC\/2019\/?p=6640"},"modified":"2025-12-07T21:29:40","modified_gmt":"2025-12-08T05:29:40","slug":"october-is-domestic-violence-awareness-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.newsmolo.com\/EDC\/2019\/2017\/10\/06\/october-is-domestic-violence-awareness-month\/","title":{"rendered":"October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>The Center]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In the time it takes you to watch one episode of 60 Minutes &#8211; 400 women in the U.S. will be beaten by their intimate partner.<\/p>\n<p>Every year, since 1989 when the U.S. Congress passed a law declaring October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM), advocates,\u00a0domestic violence agencies and those touched by domestic violence work together to bring light to an issue that affects our communities every day.<\/p>\n<p>To open Domestic Violence Awareness Month we thought we\u2019d bring you some statistics and a few ways you can help someone who might be a victim.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Statistics:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>3 women are murdered every day<\/strong>\u00a0by their current or former intimate partner<\/li>\n<li><strong>72% of all murder-suicides\u00a0<\/strong>involved an intimate partner;\u00a0<strong>94%<\/strong>\u00a0of the victims of these crimes are female.<\/li>\n<li><strong>1 in 4 women<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>1 in 7 men<\/strong>\u00a0will be victims of SEVERE physical violence by an intimate partner during their lifetime.<\/li>\n<li>On a typical day, domestic violence hotlines receive approximately\u00a0<strong>21,000\u00a0<\/strong>calls, approximately\u00a0<strong>15\u00a0<\/strong>calls every minute.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Things You Can Say or Do to Support a Victim<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Show concern. \u201cI\u2019m afraid for your safety.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Commit to being supportive. \u201cI will always be here for you.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cIf you ever need to talk, I will listen and not give advice.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Value the victim. \u201cThis is not your fault, you don\u2019t deserve to be treated this way.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Make observations. \u201cI\u2019m worried about you, you don\u2019t laugh as much as you used to.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Ask questions that focus on her\/his feelings. \u201cThat sounds scary to me, how do you feel about it?&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Direct the victim to The Center\u2019s 24\/7 Crisis Support Hotline at\u00a0<a>(530) 626-1131<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a>(916) 939-6616<\/a>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Things NOT to Say or Do<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\u201cJust leave.\u201d Every victim has different reasons why they may choose to stay in an abusive relationship, but it is important to remember that the abuse is not the victim&#8217;s fault.<\/li>\n<li>Give an ultimatum. \u201cIf you don\u2019t leave him\/her, I won\u2019t help you.\u201d This assists the batterer in isolating the victim from friends and family and cuts off their support system making it more difficult for them to leave.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t bad-mouth the abuser. As tempting as it is, this may cause the victim to become defensive of the batterer and make it \u201cunsafe\u201d to confide in you.<\/li>\n<li>Disbelieve, or demand proof of the abuse. If they feel unsafe, that is all that should matter to you.<\/li>\n<li>Tell the victim what they \u201chave to do.\u201d Domestic violence is about power and control and if a victim is going to heal, they must regain control themselves.
