There is a new tool in helping to stop the growing issue of child pornography in our society. Police departments are being given what NBC News refers to as \u201cbloodhounds for the digital age.\u201d<\/p>\n

The same way other police dogs can pick up the scent of a fugitive or a stash of weed or cocaine, these new \u201cporn dogs\u201d can smell the components of electronic media, even a micro-card as small as a fingernail that a suspect could easily hide. The specially-trained dogs can smell the adhesive found in electronic storage devices, like thumb drives and SD cards where child porn is often kept hidden.<\/p>\n

\u201c[These dogs] have found that there have been storage devices in safes under the slab of somebody\u2019s home. The criminals hide it very well,\u201d said one police officer. \u201cOfficers went in and collected things and didn\u2019t find what they were looking for, and that\u2019s when they called in this canine dog to come in and assist and on the second round he found the devices that they were looking for. Porn dog sniffed it out, it worked perfectly.\u201d<\/p>\n

These new dogs have already made a serious impact in enforcing child porn laws.\u00a0One rambunctious black Labrador named Bear \u2014 one of less than 10 dogs in the nation trained to sniff out electronic data devices \u2014 played a key role in the\u00a0arrest of\u00a0former Subway pitchman Jared Fogle<\/a>\u00a0on child-porn charges.<\/p>\n

The 2-year-old rescue dog\u00a0located\u00a0a thumb\u00a0drive that officers\u00a0had failed to find during a search of Fogle\u2019s Indiana house last July, several weeks before he agreed to plead guilty to having X-rated images of minors and paying to have sex with teenage girls.<\/p>\n

Bear has taken part in four other investigations, and he\u2019s just been sold to the Seattle Police Department to help investigate online\u00a0crimes.\u00a0Steven DeBrota, a prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney\u2019s office in Indianapolis, said when he first heard about Bear\u2019s nose, he was skeptical.\u00a0\u201cI thought I was being punked, but it does work,\u201d said DeBrota, who was the lead prosecutor on the Fogle case and calls Bear \u201ca key part of the team.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nationwide, there are dozens of task forces devoted to child pornography, but the use of \u201cporn dogs\u201d are just now starting to roll out. Less than 10 dogs are known to be active in police departments across the country, including one in Texas and one in Utah named URL (pronounced Earl).<\/p>\n

We are glad to see that the government and law enforcement are enacting new strategies to find and prosecute child pornography.\u00a0Every day, children are\u00a0filmed while they\u2019re sexually abused\u00a0and the\u00a0content is then distributed worldwide. It\u2019s a booming underground industry that continues to grow year after year. By being educated on the issue, we can help to stop the demand.<\/p>\n
