A disturbing case of animal cruelty is being reported in El Dorado County. Red, a family horse, was shot multiple times in the span of just a few months. Now the owners want answers.<\/p>\n
Chenoa Calhoun works for Red\u2019s owners on their property in Shingle Springs, exercising the gentle giant almost daily.<\/p>\n
Calhoun says the rural El Dorado County neighborhood is typically quiet and peaceful, but now she fears someone is using Red for target practice.<\/p>\n
The first incident happened a few months ago. They found Red with an unusual puncture wound.<\/p>\n
“We assumed it was something he had just gotten caught on the fence and just happened to puncture him.\u201d<\/p>\n
This past week, it happened again, and this time it was worse.<\/p>\n
“Yesterday when we found another one, we realized it was from an actual pellet gun,” said Calhoun.<\/p>\n
Pictures show what appears to be a pellet lodged in his ribcage. Red\u2019s owners have asked not to be identified out of fear of retaliation, but say they believe the bullet is from a large Bore Air Rifle, not a pellet gun.<\/p>\n
“It’s very strange,” Calhoun said. “It\u2019s definitely not a coincidence, and it\u2019s not on accident. There’s something going on for sure.”<\/p>\n
For Calhoun, the incident is unsettling.<\/p>\n
In a neighborhood tucked in the hills of El Dorado County, deliberate cruelty such as this is rare.<\/p>\n
“You would just hope that people wouldn\u2019t do things like this, because we care about our animals,” said Calhoun. “They are family so it’s very sad that someone would do something like that.”<\/p>\n
