{"id":464,"date":"2021-04-28T15:58:00","date_gmt":"2021-04-28T22:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.newsmolo.com\/EDC\/2019\/?p=464"},"modified":"2021-04-28T15:58:00","modified_gmt":"2021-04-28T22:58:00","slug":"assembly-education-vice-chair-responds-to-passage-of-anti-charter-school-legislation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.newsmolo.com\/EDC\/2019\/2021\/04\/28\/assembly-education-vice-chair-responds-to-passage-of-anti-charter-school-legislation\/","title":{"rendered":"Assembly Education Vice Chair Responds to Passage of  Anti-Charter School Legislation"},"content":{"rendered":"<pre>By: Joshua Hoove<\/pre>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SACRAMENTO \u2013 Today Assembly Education Committee Vice Chair Kevin Kiley (R-Rocklin) released the following statement in response to the passage of Assembly Bill 1316 (O\u2019Donnell) on a 5-2 vote:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Our political leaders and the Special Interests they serve have taken another step towards their goal of abolishing charter schools in California.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;This attack on hundreds of thousands of families is orchestrated by the same Special Interest responsible for our state being last in the nation in returning students to school. It&#8217;s also the same Special Interest responsible for California ranking 49th out of 50 for education outcomes in poor communities prior to COVID.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tellingly, in responding to a question from Assemblywoman Megan Dahle, the Chair of the Committee was unaware of one of the most damaging provisions of his own bill.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following anti-charter school bills have been passed and signed into law under Governor Gavin Newsom\u2019s watch:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>AB 1505 (O\u2019Donnell, 2019)<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Made it easier for a local governing board to deny a charter petition, limited review of charter denial appeals, and placed a moratorium on nonclassroom-based charters.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>AB 1507 (O\u2019Donnell, 2019)<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Limited or removed access to resource centers for charter school families across the state.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>SB 126 (Leyva, 2019)\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 Added burdensome and costly new requirements to charter schools, which Governor Jerry Brown had previously vetoed.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>SB 98 (Budget, 2020)<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Penalized growing charter schools by capping their funding while many traditional public schools remained closed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Assemblyman Kevin Kiley represents the 6<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0Assembly District, which includes the Sacramento, Placer, and El Dorado County communities of Cameron Park, El Dorado Hills, Fair Oaks, Folsom, Granite Bay, Lincoln, Loomis, Orangevale, Penryn, Rocklin, Roseville, and
