The Druid monument at Cedar Ravine and Main Streets is named the Sieg Monument in his honor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Fred was an early El Dorado County pioneer, coming to Placerville during the Gold Rush. He staked a mining claim on Hangtown Creek and eventually took ownership of that property through \u201csquatter\u2019s rights.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>The parcel became the corner of Center and Coloma Streets. He built a stone building with the gold he\u2019d found and by 1862 his establishment had become a bakery and a saloon. He was a baker by trade.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>An 1864 Mt. Dem ad read: \u201c Fred Sieg\u2019s Beer Saloon and Billiard Hall. Choice Wines, Liquors and Cigars. Free lunch at all Hours.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">HARLEY \u201cH.E.\u201d DILLINGER \u2014<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>BORN 1889 IN IOWA;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>DIED 1969 AT THE AGE OF 80<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">State Assemblyman 1924 to 1932; State Senator 1940 to 1952; member of the Democratic Central Committee; practicing attorney from 1918 to 1923 and a member of the Placerville City Council during that same time. He was an active fraternal leader of the Druids, Masons, Eagles as well as the Lions Club. He owned Dillinger\u2019s Clothing Store and Funeral Home on Main Street. He wrote a book about, and taught,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><i>Esperanto\u00a0<\/i>\u2013 an artificial,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>universal language that was created to foster world peace and international understanding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">LULU WEATHERWAX \u2013 BORN 1873 IN PLACERVILLE; DIED 1950 AT THE AGE OF 77<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">A respected artist who specialized in painting on porcelain. She was first recognized for her creative talent at the age of 14 at the 1887 El Dorado County Fair, winning multiple art categories. She exhibited her art at the 1915 Pan American Exposition in San Francisco.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Her father owned the Pioneer Hardware Store on Main St. He was Placerville\u2019s city clerk. Lulu never married. For 72 years she lived in her parent\u2019s home where she had an art studio that was described as \u201ca familiar place for art lovers.\u201d She was close friends with Stella Tracy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">STELLA RALSTON TRACY \u2014 BORN 1876 IN PLACERVILLE; DIED 1968 AT THE AGE OF 91<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">An accomplished and talented musician and vocalist.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Her mother, also a vocalist, was her mentor. They often toured the region performing duets. Stella was musically gifted and composed her first music at age 7!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>She graduated in 1895 from San Jose State Normal School (later San Jose State College) with a degree in teaching.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>She taught locally in the Brandon one room school house.\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>In 1903 she<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>married another Placerville native, Perry Tracy, whom she\u2019d know most of her life.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>She had to immediately quit teaching \u2014 in those days married women were not allowed to hold teaching jobs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">They had no children and were active in community affairs through civic and fraternal organizations.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>She was an early member of the EDC Historical Society and bequeathed her house and home goods to the Society. The Tracy Collection remains an important part of the county and city museums.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">She was descended from the wealthy Ralston family in Virginia City, which had profited from their Comstock Lode ownership.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">NANCY ROSS GOOCH \u2013 BORN A SLAVE IN 1811; DIED 1901 AT THE AGE OF 90<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Nancy was a slave who was brought, via wagon, from Missouri to Coloma in 1849 by her slave master William Gooch. Her three-year-old son, Andrew, was considered too young to be of much use in the gold fields so he was sold to a Missouri family named Monroe and left behind.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>He was given the surname Monroe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Slavery was not tolerated in the goldfields and Nancy was almost immediately given her freedom. The following year California was admitted to the Union as a free state. Nancy worked for herself doing laundry, cooking and domestic chores for the miners. She saved her money and, for $700, was able to buy Andrew\u2019s freedom who was still enslaved in Missouri.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Andrew arrived in California in 1871 and the family bought farming land in and around Coloma. Fresh fruits and vegetables in the diggings commanded a high price, making the Gooch-Monroe clan quite well to do. They were well respected in the Coloma-Placerville community.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Andrew was one of the few men who helped bury James Marshall.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>The Gooch-Monroe family has a burial plot in the Coloma Pioneer Cemetery.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">JOSEPH STAPLES, 1826 TO 1864 AND CHARLES WATSON 1827 TO 1891<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">These two men are part of the legendary June 30, 1864 Bullion Bend Robbery. This well-documented and compelling story has interesting ties to the Confederate Army, the Comstock Lode and Wells Fargo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Watson was the driver of one of the two stages held up in the late night robbery east of Placerville.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>He was said to be well-liked in the community. In 1865 he bought the Strawberry Roadhouse, which he operated with his wife until he died.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Staples was born in Ireland and, according to the 1860 census, was a miner. He was a member of the Neptune Engine Company 2 and a deputy sheriff under Placerville\u2019s Sheriff James Hume (who captured Black Bart).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Staples was a member of the posse tracking the Confederate highwaymen. The posse caught up with many of the perpetrators at the Somerset House the morning after the robbery. Staples was said to have been a little reckless, and way too quick to try and apprehend the robbers. Standing at the doorway to a room full of the cornered bad guys, he leveled his gun and commanded them to \u201csurrender.\u201d The bandits replied with a hail of bullets. Staples died outside, in front of the Somerset House.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">DR. A. E. KUNKLER \u2013 BORN 1808 IN SWITZERLAND; DIED 1881 AT THE AGE OF 73<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Dr. Kunkler was a true pioneer. He, along with his wife and young son, made the trip across Great Plains in 1849.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Kunkler was one of Placerville\u2019s first doctors. He presided over the response to the Cholera pandemic in 1850.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Between August 1 and November 12 of that year about 13% of the local population (700 people) died from the disease.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>He later would write a medical treatise on the history, diagnosis, pathology and treatment of Cholera based upon his Old Hangtown experiences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">A November 5, 1850 newspaper account of the epidemic described the situation in Sacramento:\u201d\u2026 the streets are deserted,\u2026 nearly all businesses at a standstill\u2026 a deep sense of expectancy, tinged with fear, pervading all classes\u2026 an expression of anxiety in every eye\u2026\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>apprehension of personal danger.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">ELWIN VEERKAMP \u2013<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>MAY 18, 1907\u2013DECEMBER 27, 1996<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Elwin ran cattle each spring from Gold Hill area to McCulloh Spring, (near Hellhole Dam) \u00a0on local roads and trails for most of his life\u2026 long after most ranchers had abandoned cattle drives and trucked their herds to the mountains.\u00a0Elwin\u2019s slaughterhouse was in the barn at Wakamatsu.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.buriedhistory.org\/2021-save-the-graves\/\" target=\"_blank\"
