SACRAMENTO, CA \u2013 Assemblyman Kevin Kiley (R-Rocklin) released the following statement after a party line vote against\u00a0AB 1599 (Kiley\/Gallagher\/Patterson)<\/a>\u00a0in the Assembly Public Safety Committee, legislation that would have given voters the chance to reassess Proposition 47:<\/p>\n

\u201cToday the Assembly Public Safety Committee had a chance to support real change by giving voters the opportunity to overturn Prop. 47 and restore accountability. Instead of standing with victims, they voted to keep the failing status quo in place.<\/p>\n

\u201cCalifornians from across the political spectrum support fixing Prop. 47 by a 2-1 margin. In his State of the State Address tonight, Governor Newsom needs to do the right thing and be honest about this failed experiment. The people of California deserve communities that are safe: safe to live in, safe to shop in, safe for their kids to grow up in.\u201d<\/p>\n

Just prior to the hearing the bill\u2019s lead authors \u2013 Assemblymembers Kevin Kiley, James Gallagher, and Jim Patterson \u2013 held a press conference with legislators, victims\u2019 advocates, law enforcement, and small business leaders on the steps of the State Capitol calling for the repeal of Prop. 47. Speakers included Crime Victims United President Nina Salarno Besselman, San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus, Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, El Dorado County District Attorney Vern Pierson, Placer County District Attorney Morgan Gire, and Roseville Chamber of Commerce CEO Rana Ghadban.<\/p>\n
