SACRAMENTO, CA \u2013 Today Assemblyman Kevin Kiley (R-Rocklin) released the following statement in response to Governor Newsom\u2019s State of the State address:<\/p>\n
“Tonight Governor Newsom referred to California as an inspiration to the nation. While there is great optimism and love for this state, everyday Californians are witnessing a very different version of California.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe cost of living for Californians continues to rise and the price of a tank of gas just hit another record high. I was thankful to hear the Governor acknowledge that his initial proposal on the gas tax did not go far enough. I stand ready to work with him on providing real relief for hardworking families by passing\u00a0AB 1638<\/a>, my urgency legislation that would immediately save Californians 51 cents per gallon upon his signature.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn 2020, the Governor committed to solving the homelessness crisis in his State of the State address. Today the problem has exploded in California while the rest of the country has actually seen a decline in homelessness. There is nothing to show for the billions in taxpayer dollars being thrown at the problem, but the Legislature has rejected my efforts to audit homelessness spending.<\/p>\n
\u201cNewsom highlighted his efforts to move beyond COVID-19, yet California remains in a State of Emergency even as other blue states restore local control to their citizens. He also failed to acknowledge the toll school closures and lockdowns had on students and small businesses. California now has the\u00a0lowest literacy rate<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0highest unemployment rate<\/a>\u00a0of any state.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cFinally, while 78 percent of Californians believe crime is on the rise, today the politicians in Sacramento voted down\u00a0my bill to repeal Prop. 47<\/a>\u00a0and Governor Newsom made no mention of reform in his address tonight. Californians deserve better from their representatives.\u201d<\/p>\n
