In 5th Grade [1977] I lived on Mother Lode and Lindberg across from the \u201cBlue Barn.\u201d\u00a0 The owners were the \u201cCooks\u201d and they were from the Midwest where old man Mr. Cook had made donuts his entire life.\u00a0 He had moved here and opened a donut shop – next to my bus stop. <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>I spent so much time there I learned what \u201cproofing\u201d was and how to cut an already glazed \u201cBar\u201d in half and coat it with a layer of custard mix before re-sandwiching the two halves.\u00a0 <\/span>Across the street from home, at my bus stop, and they were friendly to a little lonely boy.\u00a0 I was blessed and cursed.\u00a0 A childhood of fresh donuts still warm.\u00a0 And cursed in that NO donut will EVER be as good as Mr. Cook\u2019s donuts.\u00a0 Never!\u00a0 Not in my mind.\u00a0 Nothing can ever measure up to my childhood donuts.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>Hubba Bubba was the favored gum that year. But time waits for no one.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>Mr. and Mrs. Cook retired and a new Convenience Store opened to fill the space at the \u201cBlue Barn.\u201d<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>\u201cBubblicious\u201d was the new gum hit.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>My family was in the small retail business and cash on the barrelhead was normal.\u00a0 So when the new gum became a hit I had some.\u00a0 Other kids would ask me for some of mine\u2026<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>Kids would offer me money for some of my gum \u2026<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>Soon I was accepting offers at about 25 cents a piece or $1 a pack.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>Right away I sold out my stash hidden in my backpack so the next day I stopped back at the store at the bus stop for a resupply…<\/span><\/p>\n
This cycled over and over until I was buying cases of gum and the store had to get special orders delivered to meet my demand\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n
Soon I had many new friends and I was selling at \u201cKeystone\u201d on the whole packs and more like 400% markup on single piece sales.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>I was making a huge profit.\u00a0 I do not remember the volume as at some points it was multiple master-packs, but I do remember I was making over $20 a day!\u00a0 [That was in 1978 dollars.] Over $100 a week!\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
I was not thinking of much else as Sales became full time work in the hallways of Herbert Green School.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>THEN \u2026\u00a0 A PAIN\u2026\u00a0 MY Ear\u2026\u00a0 Not Pressure, but the pain of being pulled up!<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>Right away I heard Mr. Herrick\u2019s voice saying, \u201cI have been looking for you!\u201d\u00a0 As he held my earlobe he helped me carry some of the weight of my big head to his office with a name plaque with his name over the words \u201cPrincipal.\u201d<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>On his guided walk to his office he asked [rhetorically] if I knew the mess I had made?\u00a0 \u201cThere was gum all over the school!\u00a0 Under every desk!\u201d<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>He was a tall man and I was a short kid.\u00a0 Even at a stoop his steps tugged upwards on my ear letting the pain help his lecture stick with me.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
The school had to hire extra cleaning because of the mess – ALL OVER.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>That he had tracked me down KID BY KID and it led back to me! <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>That I had been SELLING it and I should have to pay for the cleaning!<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>He seemed very angry.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>I lost a very vigorous and profitable business AND ever since gum is BANNED at Herbert Green School.<\/span><\/p>\n
