Welch was part of Nevada’s now decimated 2019 recruiting class, which has seen more than half of its signees transfer after two seasons with the program. A 6-foot-4, 300-pounder from El Dorado Hills, Calif., Welch played in four games as a true freshman in 2019 and eight of Nevada’s nine contests last season. Since the NCAA is not counting the 2020 season as a year of eligibility, Welch has four years remaining at his next school and will be immediately eligible.<\/p>\n
Welch was a second-string right guard last season and was in a crowded mix of players looking to replace departed starter Nate Brown this offseason (spring camp finished May 2). Most of Welch’s playing time at Nevada came on special teams as he had yet to log a start in college.<\/p>\n
A graduate of Oak Ridge High, Welch was the first all-state offensive lineman from his school. He lettered in football and track from 2017-19 and was first-team all-league, first-team all-section, first-team all-NorCal and second-team all-state. Welch was a three-star recruit coming out of high school and the No. 34 center in the 2019 class, per 247Sports. He also had offers from San Jose State and Utah State.<\/p>\n
Since entering the transfer portal Wednesday, Welch has reported offers from Missouri State, Western Illinois, Clarion University, Slippery Rock University and Gannon University.<\/p>\n
