Each year the family of Carly Turnboo Shipman awards a scholarship in the amount of $1,000 to an El Dorado High School senior in memory of its namesake. Carly grew up in Placerville and attended El Dorado High School graduating as ASB president in 2010. She committed suicide in 2017 and the scholarship is focused on overcoming mental health stigma and seeking help in times of distress. Interested students submit an essay explaining how mental health issues have affected them (or a close family member) and how they have worked to overcome them.<\/div>\n

The scholarship fund has grown and now receives donations from across the country due to social media acknowledgment. When a donation is received Kimmy White, Carly\u2019s mother, sends a thank you letter with a packet of sunflower seeds to plant in honor of Carly and her love of sunflowers. Commemorative sunflowers are planted in several places locally and in Elk Grove, Riverside, Idaho, Oklahoma, Arkansas, North Carolina and Michigan, according to White.<\/p>\n

Carly\u2019s scholarship fund can be found at El Dorado Savings Bank under Carly Turnboo Shipman Memorial Scholarship Fund.<\/p>\n

This year, due to overwhelming response to the fund, three prizes have been awarded. The first went to Gabriel Aguilar, who received $1,000 and the others went to siblings Madeline and Ava Dufour, who split the award and received $500 each. Each of these students wrote winning essays on the nature of overcoming grief due to tragic loss.<\/p>\n

The awards ceremony took place May 5 at El Dorado High School. White presented the awards and shared Carly\u2019s story.<\/p>\n
