We moved to Meyers.<\/p>\n
Our new home sat on Mountain Meadow Drive, overlooking the broad meadow where the Upper Truckee River wandered through the grasses on its way to Lake Tahoe. In the morings, the fog would settle over the meadow like a wool blanket. By afternoon, hawks circled overhead while the breeze rippled through acres of sage and wildflowers. To a young boy, it looked like something right out of the Ponderosa.<\/p>\n
But the real treasure stood in our front yard.<\/p>\n
Towering above the house was a giant Jeffrey pine. At least that’s what I’ve always called it. Back then, every big pine looked enormous. Somewhere around forty feet above the ground, someone had built a tree fort unlike anything I’d ever seen.<\/p>\n
The tree had been topped years before, leaving a broad platform where the fort was built. Whoever designed it wasn’t fooling around. It had a roof, walls, windows, and even electricity. Metal conduit ran up the tree carrying wires to lights inside. To a little boy, it wasn’t a tree house.<\/p>\n
It was a castle.<\/p>\n
Or maybe a lookout tower.<\/p>\n
Or Fort Cartwright.<\/p>\n
The fort was already there when my father bought the house\u2014and the matching house next door. I don’t know who built it, but I often wondered if they ever imagined the adventures another family would have there.<\/p>\n
Getting to the top was half the challenge.<\/p>\n
Every climb felt like an expedition. We’d work our way up the trunk, gripping rough bark and sturdy limbs until finally pulling ourselves through the opening into our kingdom above the world. From up there we could see across the meadow, watch storms roll across, and pretend we were keeping watch over the whole South Shore.<\/p>\n
The world looked different from forty feet in the air.<\/p>\n
Then the wind would come.<\/p>\n
Not the gentle breeze you feel standing on the ground.<\/p>\n
Up in that tree, even a modest Sierra wind reminded you that trees are living things.<\/p>\n
At first you’d hear it.<\/p>\n
The soft whisper of needles.<\/p>\n
Then the creaking.<\/p>\n
And finally…<\/p>\n
Movement.<\/p>\n
Not inches.<\/p>\n
Feet.<\/p>\n
The entire tree would slowly lean one direction, pause for what felt like forever, then sweep back the other way. The first time it happened, I grabbed onto the wall with both hands, convinced the whole fort was about to come crashing down.<\/p>\n
It didn’t.<\/p>\n
The old pine had been dancing with the Sierra winds long before I was born, and it knew exactly what it was doing.<\/p>\n
Eventually, so did we.<\/p>\n
Instead of being afraid, we’d laugh as the fort swayed back and forth like the mast of a ship at sea. It became part of the adventure. We weren’t just playing in a tree anymore.<\/p>\n
We were sailing above the meadow.<\/p>\n
Those were the days before warning labels, liability waivers, and backyard inspections. If something looked fun, you climbed it. If it looked dangerous, you climbed it a little more carefully.<\/p>\n
Somehow, we all survived.<\/p>\n
Looking back now, I realize that tree taught me something my father never had to explain.<\/p>\n
Strength isn’t the ability to stand perfectly still.<\/p>\n
Strength is knowing how to bend when the wind comes.<\/p>\n
That old pine had weathered countless Tahoe winters, heavy snows, and mountain storms. It yielded just enough to survive them all.<\/p>\n
Years later, I’ve often thought about that tree whenever life has started to sway beneath my own feet.<\/p>\n
Sometimes the strongest thing you can do… is simply hold on and let the wind pass.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
